Crewkerne, UK (10 September 2026) – A customer-owned Ariel Nomad has successfully completed one of the world’s toughest rally events – the gruelling 2026 Morocco Desert Challenge. The achievement provides a real-world demonstration of the durability, capability and adaptability of Ariel’s off-road performance car.
Wanting to compete in one of the world’s most demanding rally raid events, long-term customers Gavin Kirby and Kevin Henderson approached Ariel with a clear objective: adapt the road-legal Nomad to cope with thousands of kilometres of the most punishing desert terrain while retaining the reliability and drivability that define the model.
The goal was to complete the Morocco Desert Challenge – an intense eight-day rally‑raid covering 2,800 kilometres over 8 stages, across Morocco’s Sahara Desert dunes, salt flats and rocky pistes. With individual stages of over 450km the route stretched from Ouarzazate, south of Morocco’s High Atlas mountains, to the Mediterranean seaside town of Saïdia, across Morocco’s most breathtaking and demanding landscapes.
Guided by Ariel Managing Director Henry Siebert-Saunders – an experienced off-road racer – Ariel’s engineering, service, and fabrication specialists developed a special off-road package capable of handling the extreme conditions.
Henry Siebert-Saunders, Ariel Managing Director: “The Nomad was designed to be a genuinely capable off-road performance car, but the Morocco Desert Challenge takes things to another level. Working with Gavin and Kevin gave us the opportunity to apply our engineering expertise to a very specific challenge and develop a bespoke package capable of handling conditions far beyond those encountered in normal use.
“What’s particularly satisfying is that the car demonstrated exactly the qualities we value most at Ariel: capability, reliability, and adaptability. The fact it completed the event with only routine maintenance required is a testament to both the strength of the underlying Nomad platform and the commitment of everyone involved.”
At the heart of the programme was a newly engineered suspension system. Extended front and rear wishbones, to give a wider track, increased both ride height and suspension travel, while the tuned Ariel Ohlins dampers allowed the Nomad to absorb the deep ruts, rocks, and repeated high-speed impacts encountered throughout the event.
Development and validation included extensive testing at Sweet Lamb Motorsport Complex in Wales, followed by road testing to ensure the modified Nomad retained the usability expected of every Ariel. The result was a machine capable of tackling the demands of long-distance desert competition while preserving the direct and involving character that has made the Nomad a favourite among off-road driving enthusiasts.
Ariel’s involvement extended beyond vehicle development. The company supplied an Ariel-approved spares package and dispatched technician Shaun Parr to accompany the team throughout the event. Working across the rally’s ever-changing locations, Parr carried out maintenance and servicing on the Nomad while also supporting the team’s day-to-day logistics.
Despite the severity of the terrain and the sustained mechanical demands of the event, the Nomad completed the challenge with remarkably few issues. Routine maintenance including air filter replacements, oil services, brake pad changes, and damper servicing allowed the car to successfully finish every stage and the complete event.
Gavin Kirby, Nomad owner and driver: “The Morocco Desert Challenge lives up to its name. The desert tests both machine and driver relentlessly for eight days and many thousands of kilometres, but despite everything it threw at us, the Nomad brought us back to camp every night.
“There were some sections of the course that, had we come across them under different circumstances, we would have turned around and found a different route. However, to complete the MDC, we either tackled what was in front of us or admit defeat. Not only did the Nomad get us through these sections, but it tackled them with style and grace.
“Having both owned Nomads for some years before the event, Kev and I found a whole new level of respect for what the Nomad is actually capable of. Completing the event is something we’re immensely proud of, and an enormous amount of thanks go out to Henry and his team at Ariel for being with us every step of the way.”
